The Equine Family

Domestic Donkeys

Including where the word “ass” is used, and why.

What a donkey is

The domestic donkey (Equus asinus) is a separate species from the horse, descended from the African wild ass. “Ass” is the older, formal name for the species; “donkey” is the everyday word. A male is a jack and a female is a jenny or jennet.

How they differ from horses

Donkeys have long ears, an upright mane, a tufted tail and a loud bray. They evolved in dry country, so they tend to be cautious and thoughtful rather than quick to flee — the source of their reputation for stubbornness.

Sizes and uses

Breed groups range from miniature donkeys to large standards and mammoth jacks. Donkeys carry packs, guard livestock, work in harness and are much-loved companions.
