How a horse auction works
Horses are listed in a catalog with pedigree details, shown to buyers beforehand, then offered in the sales ring, where an auctioneer takes bids.
Notable sales
Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale in Lexington, Kentucky, and Fasig-Tipton sales in the U.S., and Tattersalls in Newmarket, England, are among the best-known Thoroughbred auctions.
Before you go
Many sales welcome visitors, but rules differ. Check the sale company’s website.
