The objective
Complete three phases on the same horse with the lowest penalty score: dressage, cross-country and show jumping.
Format
Dressage shows obedience and suppleness. Cross-country tests courage and fitness over solid natural fences across open country. Show jumping, usually last, tests whether the horse is still careful and fit.
Scoring
Penalties add up across all three phases. Refusals, time and knocked rails all add penalties; the lowest total wins.
Following the action
Cross-country day is the highlight for many spectators — pick a spot near a water complex or a big fence.
